Spring Forward, Fall Back

Times changed this weekend. My internet-connected clocks are correct; the rest will be dealt with at some point in the next few days. It’s as good a reminder as any that annual planning season is here. To get started thinking about 2027, here’s my gentle request: in November, take a clarity break (you, a pen, a blank piece of paper, a quiet place, no distractions) and focus on the EOS Life.

What’s the EOS Life?

  • Doing what you love,
  • with people you love,
  • being compensated appropriately,
  • making a massive impact,
  • with time for other passions.

Start by rating yourself 1–10 on each bullet. Then get out of the way and let your brain get to work. What do you want to be different this time next year? What’s in your control and what isn’t? We set a 10-year target and 3-year picture for the organization... do you have those for yourself? Let your thoughts wander, but keep coming back to the EOS Life. When you’re out of time, read through your notes and highlight the ideas that belong in your team’s annual planning. Bring them to the session.

Your business is full of these "spring forward, fall back” rhythms. It’s easy to get mired in them and lose the big picture. It’s why the first day of an annual session is spent completely zoomed out. Our brains need time to adjust to the wider lens before they’re at their most creative. A great clarity break gives you a head start.

All 10s Podcast: Quarterly Conversations

A controversial take: cancel your weekly 1:1s and simply run great L10s (team) and great quarterly conversations (individual). That’s all you need. I promise. Listen to the episode and let me know what you think.

Speaking of “with people you love”

I married Quinn Friday and we hosted a weekend in Chapel Hill, NC full of friends and family gathered from around the world. Thank you for all the warm wishes you’ve already shared. Quinn, Zoe, Nora and I had fun with a drone while the party was happening: watch the flyover.
